The Mount Holdsworth - Jumbo Circuit is a popular circular track in the Tararua Range.
The track starts at the Holdsworth campsite where there is a generous parking for the people who come for hikes.
We start walking and a few metres into the track we leave the Holdsworth lodge on our right and then cross through a bridge. A few hundred metres further we get to a junction, left to Rocky lookout and Powell hut, right to Jumbo hut. Jumbo hut is the way we will come back to close the loop.
We make a left and start the ascent. After a bit over a kilometre we get to Rocky Lookout where we enjoy the great views of all the track we are about to hike. From that spot we can see Powell hut and Mount Holdsworth (1470 m), the highest elevation of the day.

We continue with our demanding ascent for another 3 kilometres until arriving at a shelter, where we also find toilets. After a short break we continue our ascent only to find out it gets even steeper.
One a a half kilometres later we make a halt and enjoy some nice views from the top of a rock. I marked this spot with a waypoint named "Views from rock" on the GPS track.
After a short recess to take some water and enjoy the views we continue for a further 300 metres and get to Powell hut.
We take a good rest here, enjoying the views and having a snack, before resuming our ascent and walking the last 1.5 kilometres that leaves us at the top of Mount Holdsworth. Beautiful views of the Tararua Range from the summit.

We come down a bit and continue walking on the ridge for about 3 kilometres until reaching the second summit of the day, Jumbo Peak (1405 m).
From Jumbo Peak to Jumbo hut is only one kilometer mostly descending.
Good views from Jumbo hut as well where we take another short break and continue our descent through the forest.
The following 2 kilometres are very steep descending through forest, until arriving to Atiwhakatu Hut. Be careful in this section not to miss the track.
From Atiwhakatu Hut is a gentle descent along the river until reaching the junction mentioned before.
We walk the last kilometre and get back to Holdsworth campsite where we parked the car.

In short beautil and demanding 22.5 Km track in the Tararua Range. Be prepared for all weather conditions since the weather can change here really quickly.
Also keep in mind that there are quite a few tracks here, you will cross several junctions. Just make sure you follow the correct ones.
